Exploring New Zealand by car is an unforgettable experience, with landscapes that are worlds apart from those of our beloved Europe. Driving is on the left and overtaking on the right, so be sure to remember this as habits often take over. Additionally, be cautious of the often winding roads and be aware that journeys often take longer than expected.

What official documents to obtain before your trip?

To drive in New Zealand, you must have an international driving permit, unless you hold an English license. Additionally, you must also carry your original and valid national license with you. The minimum legal age to drive in New Zealand is 18 years.

All about speed limits

In urban areas, the speed limit is 50 km/h and 100 km/h on most roads and highways. Be sure to check the signs carefully. One of them has a white background with a black diagonal indicating that the maximum speed is 100 km/h, but some road sections may be unsuitable for this speed.

Blood alcohol level: zero tolerance for young drivers

For young drivers under 20 years old, zero tolerance for alcohol is enforced. For drivers over 20 years old, the maximum allowed blood alcohol level is 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood or 250 micrograms per liter of breath.

Very strict parking rules

Parking regulations must be followed to the letter. In case of an infraction, fines or even vehicle removal are very swift. Note that you must park in the direction of traffic, which is on the left side.
