The Portuguese roads are well maintained, and visiting the country by vehicle turns out to be surprisingly easy. However, although road safety legislation differs little from that of other European countries, caution is advised behind the wheel, as the number of accidents is higher than the European average. For a safe stay, consult the main rules that must be observed on Portuguese roads.

Minimum age and required official documents

Your valid national driving license, liability insurance, and vehicle registration certificate are sufficient to drive in Portugal. The legal minimum age to drive is 18 years.

Zero tolerance for speeding violations

Be vigilant regarding speed limits and violations, which are very strictly punished with a high fine. On the highway, the maximum allowed speed is 120 km/h, and on the expressway, it is 100 km/h. Within built-up areas, the limit is 50 km/h.

Keep a close eye on your alcohol level

The crackdown on drivers under the influence of alcohol is a priority in Portugal. As in most European countries, the permitted blood alcohol level is set at 0.5 g/l. Remember that some Portuguese liqueurs have a high alcohol content.

Mostly paid parking

In the city, almost all parking spaces require payment. To avoid ending up with a fine, you must deposit an amount proportional to the parking time in the nearest parking meter.
