Ecotourism is traveling to natural areas while preserving the environment. It is also known as nature travel or nature vacation. The goal is to contribute to the protection of nature by the local population.

In Belgium, ecotourism is especially possible in the Ardennes. In this beautiful region, it is very feasible to consciously engage with nature and the surroundings. The local population often offers opportunities to purchase organic products.

Responsible holiday homes in the Belgian Ardennes

Many owners of holiday homes in the Ardennes have made large or small sustainable adjustments to their homes out of respect for nature and the environment. They are often equipped with a largely ecological interior, are heated ecologically, and provided with hot water using solar panels.

In various holiday homes, sustainable, natural materials, such as slate, were consciously chosen during construction or later during renovation. In some cases, they have received the Panda certificate from the World Wildlife Fund for this. Around the homes, fruit trees are often planted, from which guests can pick the fruit themselves.

Tasty and responsible eating in the Ardennes

The owners of the holiday homes can not only tell you everything about the surroundings but also about the availability of organic products. These are fair products, grown with respect for nature and its inhabitants. They often taste the best because they carry the typical scents, colors, and flavors that match a holiday environment.

For example, it is possible to buy organic cheese at a local cheese farm. You can be sure that the cows that produced the milk for the cheese lead a good life. At various abbeys, special local beer is available from their own breweries, as well as bread made by the monks themselves.

Discover nature with the children

You cannot start early enough to point out the beauty and importance of nature to children. The Ardennes are extremely suitable for ecotourism with the whole family. The nature discovery center Aquascope makes young and old aware of nature. You can go on discovery tours, and there are exhibitions and play areas. In the restaurant, you can enjoy organic local dishes.

Another way to enjoy the nature of the Ardennes is to visit the nature reserve the High Fens. In this area, you will find forests and marshes that have formed naturally. You will also encounter various rare animals and plants. In the middle of the High Fens lies Nature Park Botrange, where it is possible to get to know the natural area even better through various activities.

The Belgian Ardennes are therefore extremely suitable for ecotourism. The nature is beautiful, and you will also find a surprising, diverse animal world. The animals can be admired not only in the wild but also in various animal parks, of which the Wildpark Bouillon is the most famous.
