Discover Girona with Europcar
Rent your car in Girona with Europcar
100 kilometers north of Barcelona, Girona is an underrated city. With its painted buildings hanging over the river, its gothic churches, and its cobblestone streets, the city has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Girona is cosmopolitan and cultured enough for a quick weekend, but significantly less touristy than the Catalan capital. Girona is picturesque and charming enough for you to truly relax.
A stone's throw from the beaches of the Costa Brava, Girona is the ideal place for a trip that combines relaxation, history, and culture by the sea. Rent a car in Girona and head east along the coast in search of crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and fragrant pine forests.

Driving in Girona
Driving in Girona is quite easy and the city is well connected with highways leading south to Barcelona and north to the French border. While driving in the historic center is not recommended, there are plenty of parking lots nearby where you can park your rental car.
When driving in Spain, the speed limit in urban areas and cities is limited to 50 km/h, while on national roads it is 90 km/h and on highways 120 km/h.
In Spain, highway tolls can be paid in cash, credit/debit card, or via a mobile app. However, there are a number of routes that can be taken to avoid toll roads if you wish to travel at a more relaxed pace.
When driving along the Costa Brava, you will find a number of small towns that have a road passing through the center, as well as a bypass that avoids them. If traveling with a larger car, opt for the latter to avoid narrow streets and roads.
Discover Girona and its surroundings by car
Girona may be full of culture and charm, but if you want to get away from the city for a few days, you'll find that the best of the Catalonia region is not far away. The province has a wealth of beaches scattered along the Costa Brava, such as Platja de Treumal or Cala del Senyor Ramón. Also, impressive medieval stone towns are scattered throughout the region. The most charming ones are found in the Ribera d'Ebre region, with their castles that seem to teeter on the riverbanks, or in Ripoll, a city carved into the mountain with its monastery and its Romanesque church of San Pere.
Travel to the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca with a ferry from Barcelona, or travel along the coast and embark on a journey south to Valencia, 440 kilometers away by car.
Visit Platja del Canadell
There are countless beaches on the Costa Brava, but Platja del Canadell is among the best. Popular among Catalan tourists, this small and charming beach town has cultivated a unique atmosphere with its adorned houses overlooking the beach and its fishermen's porches with typical painted doors by the sea. It is best to visit the beach off-season. Rent a car with Europcar in Girona, head north, and park the car near the beach to enjoy a relaxing day trip.
Thrills at Port Aventura Park
Just 200 kilometers south of Girona, you will find Port Aventura, the largest amusement park in Spain. With 42 attractions and roller coasters, 2 water parks on site, and a new Ferrari Land park, you can entertain the whole family. Parking is 12€ per day. From the park, you can easily access the nearby coastal towns of Salou and Tarragona, so make the most of your trip with your Europcar rental car and visit them while you're in the area.
What not to miss if you're in Girona
Girona is the true authentic heart of Catalonia, with a variety of traditional restaurants offering local specialties from Iberian ham to fresh fish, to historical monuments dating back to the 12th century, showcasing its rich Jewish foundations. Be sure to visit the 14th-century Romanesque cathedral with its baroque facade or visit the Arab Baths, an ornate Christian bathhouse inspired by traditional Muslim designs. For art and culture, visit the Museu d'Art with its collection of 85,000 pieces.
