Rent your car in Zaragoza with Europcar

With its ancient ruins, moorish architecture declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and its lively gastronomic life, Zaragoza is one of the most underrated cities in Spain. One of its great advantages is its relative tranquility compared to cities like Barcelona or Madrid.
Located in the northeast of Spain, Zaragoza is close to the Basque Country and the border with France. Renting a car in Zaragoza offers great opportunities to venture into other regions.

Driving in Zaragoza

Only an EU or EEA driving license is needed to rent a car in Zaragoza or any other city in Spain. International driving licenses are accepted but not mandatory.
The maximum speed limit is 120 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban areas, and 90 km/h on national roads. On highways, drivers often indicate they want to overtake a car by flashing their headlights.
The center of Zaragoza does not have a large number of parking spaces: they are indicated with blue or orange road markings. Parking is enforced from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. There are two street parking zones: in the orange zone, the maximum stay is one hour, in the blue zone it is 2 hours. Parking is free on Sundays and holidays.
Zaragoza also has several parking lots that we recommend using for longer stays.
When driving in Spain, you will encounter tolls on highways. You can pay them with cash or credit card. Most tolls have an electronic payment system called "Telepeaje" or "Via T". Drivers can acquire these transmitters at banks or gas stations.

Discover Zaragoza and its surroundings by car

Zaragoza has so much history, food, and culture that you will have no trouble finding activities and filling your week in this city. If you find yourself in Zaragoza in mid-October, you won't be able to miss the Fiestas del Pilar, a celebration in honor of the Virgin of Pilar, the city's patron saint, which lasts a week.
Less than an hour south of Zaragoza is Fuendetodos (47 kilometers), the birthplace of Goya. Here you can visit the 18th-century farmhouse where he was born. Today, the farmhouse houses the Goya Museum and is filled with great masterpieces, such as The Disasters of War and The Follies.
If you want more culture, to the north is Huesca (74 kilometers), a city with more than 2,000 years of history preserved within its medieval walls. The ancient winding streets hide treasures like the Monastery of San Pedro el Viejo, a Benedictine monastery built in the 11th century.
Just behind Huesca is the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park whose massif is protected by UNESCO. Nearby is the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, an ideal place for outdoor activities such as hiking.

Visit La Aljafería

The best example of moorish architecture outside of Andalusia, La Aljafería is a palace built in the early 11th century. Enjoy daily guided tours (in several languages during July and August) to see the entire palace, converted into a parliament in 1987. The stylized arches and arabic inscriptions are just some of the most impressive aspects of islamic art you can see. In the resplendent throne room, you can highlight the catholic and christian influences from after the arab occupation.

Visit the Zaragoza Aquarium

Built during the 2008 International Exposition, the Zaragoza aquarium is the largest in Spain and the third largest in the world. Specializing in river life, from the Amazon River to the local Ebro River, it offers diverse attractions around numerous species of fish. It is the perfect place for a fun family visit less than 15 minutes by car from the center of Zaragoza.

What you shouldn't miss if you're in Zaragoza

Enjoy the varied and unique attractions of Zaragoza! Among the must-see visits, the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar has to be the first on your list. It represents a good example of well-preserved moorish architecture: its bright yellow and blue tiled roofs will fascinate you. There are so many museums and cathedrals to satisfy your cultural cravings, as well as tapas restaurants to feed your hunger. You can't miss Casa Lac, opened in 1825, which stands as one of the oldest restaurants in Spain. Zaragoza is also the hometown of the painter Francisco de Goya. The Goya Museum - Ibercaja Collection contains the largest collection of his work outside of Madrid.
